Kearny DMD Senior Receives Linked Learning Scholarship

The Linked Learning Alliance has awarded its annual scholarship awards to five deserving high school seniors graduating from eligible Linked Learning pathways. The awardees hail from diverse pathways throughout California, from Kearny High School of Digital Media and Design in San Diego to Sacramento's Arthur A. Benjamin Health Professions High School. While their career goals vary, each scholar demonstrated a passion to learn and apply knowledge in the classroom and in employer-sponsored work based learning experiences.

"These scholarship winners are our future doctors, designers, engineers, educators, and scientists - each one well equipped as a lifelong learner and leader because of their Linked Learning experience," said Anne B. Stanton, President of the Linked Learning Alliance. "These young people are resilient, self-determined, creative, persistent, and fully prepared to meet the challenges of the future of work.

"They inspire the Linked Learning field to double down and ensure that even more young people have these opportunities. I also congratulate educators, employers and partners in Sacramento, Fresno, Visalia, Los Angeles, and San Diego who have embraced high quality Linked Learning and made it a reality for these young people and many more. The positive impact of their hard work is being felt in communities across California and beyond."

Rahma is a senior at Kearny High School of Digital Media and Design at San Diego Unified School District. She has recently completed work experience with CEO Lavada Jennings of HOFRCC in line with Linked Learning's Digital Media and Design Pathway. Rahma plans to continue her education by studying interior design at the Art Institute of Orange County.

These annually awarded prizes are given to college-bound students who have exemplified the motivation and dedication at the core of Linked Learning's mission. The opportunity to apply for the Linked Learning Scholarship is only available to students in Linked Learning pathways that have achieved Candidate level or above on Linked Learning Certification. Each scholarship is worth $1,000.

Linked Learning Certification is a platform that supports and provides recognition of continuous improvement and progress toward preparing all students for college, career, and life. Districts can use Linked Learning Certification to register pathways that provide or are aspiring to provide students a Linked Learning experience that integrates the four core components of Linked Learning: 1) college preparatory academics, 2) high-quality sequenced CTE courses, 3) work-based learning and 4) comprehensive support services for students.

Since the release of Linked Learning Certification at the beginning of this 2017, over 550 pathways have registered to participate in the certification process, including pathways in California, Massachusetts, Illinois, Michigan, Texas, Kansas, India, and Canada.

STEMM Day grows at Patrick Henry

From The Mission Times Courier:

Five years ago, engineering teachers at Patrick Henry High School (PHHS) came up with a plan to host an event that would bring elementary school students to the Henry campus and interact with their high school counterparts participating in STEMM activities.
That first year, the event was held in the quad area at Patrick Henry and was “very minimal” with only two local elementary schools participating, said PHHS Engineering Academy lead teacher Adria Van Loan-Polselli.

When Van Loan-Polselli took over the engineering department, she kept the program going the same way for two years, engaging in STEMM activities she found online and hosting a small handful of schools in the quad. But as more and more area schools embraced a STEMM-focused curriculum, the STEMM Day event blossomed.
“So, one of the biggest feedback and reflection that we got from the fifth-grade teachers was to step it up a notch, include some of the robotics and just basically grow it and make it bigger,” Van Loan-Polselli said.
Last year, STEMM Day moved venues to the Patrick Henry amphitheater where all the different Henry cluster school students could be together. Also, the schools invited expanded to include charter schools as well as Catholic School St. Therese Academy.
“We really want the kids to get to know each other from the different schools before they go to middle school and before they come to high school together,” Van Loan-Polselli said.

Morse Visits UCSD’s CS Research

On Friday, June 1,Mrs. Tomar’s students from Morse High’s AP Computer Science Principles class visited UCSD to learn about how computer science is applied in research and technology.

The students began their day by visiting the Audiospatialization Lab at UCSD’s Qualcomm Institute. They learned about sound technology and how it can be used in various fields and applications. For example, they demonstrated a speaker system that can pinpoint individuals and send specific sounds to that travel to the person as they walk around. When would this be useful? To provide translation services to multiple people at a location such as a museum. One of the presenters that shared the work was a Morse graduate!

From there, they visited the Design Lab where we discussed how computer scientists focus on solving problems and it isn’t just about coding. When computer scientists develop automation of processes, they strive to make a solution that can be applied to more than one thing. For example, if an essay autograder was made, then it would be more beneficial to do all essays, not just one on World War I.

Afterwards, they heard from a panel of computer science students from CS4Each. They shared their experiences and dispelled misconceptions. Morse students got a chance to ask their own questions and get mentorship.

After lunch, they a toured of the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department, the Graphics Lab and the Robotics Lab. Students got to experience cutting edge technology and how they can begin to learn more about the field to contribute to in the future.
Thank you to Lovella (Morse grade) who arranged for the experience at Qualcomm Institute and Professor Porter who organized the activities at CSE.

Bullying Prevention

“When adults respond quickly and consistently to bullying behavior they send the message that it is not acceptable. Research shows this can stop bullying behavior over time.

Parents, school staff, and other adults in the community can help kids prevent bullying by talking about it, building a safe school environment, and creating a community-wide bullying prevention strategy.”

Check out the federal website hosted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services” and read about how you can help prevent or stop bullying.
