Serra High Students Learn How to Argue!

Teacher leaders from Math, English Language Arts, Science, and History Social-Science at Serra High School are working with district Literacy Coaches to show students critical 21st century skills - - - how to make a solid argument! Students are learning how claims, evidence and reasoning are critical in all of their classes. Teachers gave a pre-assessment to find out students’ understanding of these skills and then got together to examine the results. Now teachers are working with coaches to design instruction to keep pushing these argument skills forward. Students are already making connections about claims, evidence and reasoning in different subject areas. Serra math teacher Erin Sullivan says, “Looking at student work with other teachers was invaluable. We even got to use OUR argumentative skills to identify claims in MATH!.” Look out San Diego Unified - - Serra students are becoming skilled at showing that they are right!
