Volunteers needed to help build the computer science program in our schools!

TEALS (Technology Education and Literacy in Schools) is coming to San Diego Unified!

We recognize that technology is transforming the world around us. Having a computer science education is key to our students being ready for the future job market. Did you know computer science majors can earn 40% more than the college average? Or that there are currently over 500,000 open computer science positions without qualified talent to fill them? We are proud to grow our computer science program and develop the next generation of computational scientists and software engineers.

TEALS pairs computer science (CS) professionals with classroom teachers to team-teach CS to high schools students and build teacher capacity. Over two years, the classroom teacher gradually takes over the responsibilities of teaching the course. TEALS volunteers create a ripple effect: impacting not just the students they teach, but the hundreds of students who will study CS with the teacher they helped prepare. Started in 2009 by Microsoft employee Kevin Wang, who developed and ran the program in his spare time, TEALS was embraced by Microsoft in 2011 and is supported by the company as part of its global YouthSpark initiative, which aims to increase access to CS education for all youth around the world.

TEALS is currently looking for dedicated volunteers to join our program for the 2018-2019 school year. Learn more by watching an informational video and apply online at tealsk12.org/apply! If you have more questions, please contact qianqian@tealsk12.org for more information. We’re eager to have more volunteers and happy to answer any remaining questions you may have!
