Promoting Literacy in Math
On Wednesday, October 3rd, Kearny math teachers participated in a professional development workshop focusing on increasing literacy in the mathematics classrooms. Throughout the day, teachers planned for ways to use strategies such as sentence stems, collaborative conversations, and pre and post assessments, all emphasizing ways to teach math content while giving students opportunity to explain their thinking in writing and in speaking. With the Generating Claims, Evidence, and Reasoning Critical Concept as a focus, teachers collaborated around ways to immediately support students to extend their thinking by making claims about their math processes, and to use evidence and reasoning as support.
