All Aboard!

11 schools have joined the STEAM pilot program in San Diego Unified School District for a total of 43 elementary schools engaging in STEAM one hour a day, four days a week.

The program is extending from transitional kindergarten and kindergarten classrooms to first grade classrooms in the 2019-2020 school year. Onboarding TK/K and first grade teachers were trained in STEAM pedagogy this May. Teachers participated in a Next Generation Science Standard adult learning experience, engaged in design thinking, expressed their creativity with LEGO, created a class website, and developed agency by reflecting on their learning.

“We wanted to practice what we preach,” said Michael Goodbody, STEAM Program Manager. “We invited teachers into the role of a learner to have them experience the same type of learning we hope to see in our TK/K and first grade classrooms. We want to see students thinking critically, solving problems, and reflecting on their learning. We asked teachers to do the same.”

The STEAM program has built in teacher training as an integral part of its curriculum rollout. When teachers experience the same type of learning that is desired in classrooms, they are better able to create those experiences for their students. One teacher commented, “These days have been the best training I have been to in my 33 years with SDUSD.” Another teacher reported, “I feel refreshed and inspired to integrate what I have learned in my own classroom!” Here’s to STEAMing ahead in 2019 and transforming learning for all learners, teachers included.

In addition to supporting teachers practice, these opportunities support the development of a STEAM culture and mindset at a site. According to John Hattie, professor and author of Visible Learning, collective teacher efficacy is the “number one influence related to student achievement.” When a school site is united in purpose and and practice amazing things happen for all students

There’s A New Mural in Linda Vista!

After two years of planning and designing, a new community mural went up on the front entry to Linda Vista STEAM Magnet School! The art piece is the result of the collaboration between the school, Bayside Community Center, donors and artist Gloria Favela Rocha.

The mural process began with a call for Linda Vista students to create images that reflected their learning community. Once designs were chosen, it was then the task of muralist Rocha to interpret the student designs into a cohesive image to serve as both a traffic-calming element to the busy intersection and a beautifying component in the neighborhood. In its original state, the mural was envisioned to be part of the intersection, but as the project evolved the mural became part of the school’s front façade celebrating the spirit of STEAM.

The actual painting took a week to complete and can be viewed near the corner of Ulric and Osler Streets. Funds to create the mural were received from large and small donations through Bayside Community Center.

Innovate & Celebrate Family STEAM Day

This month, Carson Elementary STEAM Magnet hosted its second annual Innovate & Celebrate Family STEAM Day in collaboration with the University of San Diego and Kearny High School’s E2E Lab.

Innovate & Celebrate is an event that brings together Linda Vista’s academic institutions, students and families as they celebrate the power of STEAM.

In preparing for the event, USD and Kearny student volunteers met in Kearny’s E2E Lab to develop the hands-on STEAM activities such as Squishy Circuits, Ice Cream in a Bag, Density Rainbows, Origami Safari, Homemade Lava Lamps, and many more!

On the day of the event, Carson’s parents and guardians joined in the STEAM fun, engaging right alongside their children. Looking to next year, the collaborators hope to grow Innovate & Celebrate Family STEAM Day to include middle school volunteers and Carson’s preschool learners.

CyberPatriot XI National Finals

Setting the precedence in the corps, the CyberPatriot team made history by winning first place in CyberPatriot All Service Division National Competition for the first time ever in CA-935th history.

Consisting of seniors c/Colonel Valerie Ho, c/2nd Lt Alex Roh, c/Lieutenant Colonel Brandon Nguyen, c/Captain Shane Donahue, and c/Major Evan Dicker, the competing lineup spent their last CyberPatriot competition accompanied by Lieutenant Colonel Michael Sheldon during the week of April 7 to April 10 in Baltimore, Maryland. When the cadets were not in competition mode, the cadets, as well as Lieutenant Colonel Sheldon, spent their free time in Baltimore by exploring the city's streets and shops.

Throughout the year, the cadets on the CyberPatriot team worked hard and competed against five-thousand other schools to reach the national competition. Competing under the team name, Team Byte Sized Falcons, these senior cadets slowly but surely were able to narrow down the competition at the national competition and emerge at the very top. Not only were the cadets able to bring home the first place trophy, each member of the competing lineup received a two-thousand dollar scholarship. Team Byte Sized Falcons were also the AT&T Mobile Device Component Winner, and also had the chance to meet and greet several high-ranking officials.

A huge congratulations to Team Byte Sized Falcons as well as the CyberPatriot team and good luck to the seniors in the next chapters of their lives!
