District Wellness Initiative Receives 2019 Partner Initiative Recognition Award

The San Diego Unified School District Wellness Initiative was awarded the San Diego County Childhood Obesity Initiative’s (COI) Partner Initiative Recognition Award for 2019. The District Wellness Initiative launched in 2016 to support the health and well-being of students, staff, and families in the district. The Initiative engages more than 175 School Site Wellness Coordinators, 8 Central Office Site Wellness Coordinators and 60 District Wellness Council members to ensure meaningful implementation of the District’s Wellness Policy, and alignment with the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child framework from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In addition, the District Wellness Initiative reflects the efforts of five High School Wellness Centers and 12 Healthy Start Sites to bring together community-based organizations, district staff and volunteers to ensure student access to social support services and community resources. Heartfelt congratulations and thanks to all of the staff, students, families, and community members who continue to make this wellness work possible, and to the San Diego Unified School District representatives who are a part of the San Diego County Childhood Obesity Initiative!

The San Diego County Childhood Obesity Initiative (COI) is a public-private partnership with the mission of reducing and preventing childhood obesity through policy, systems, and environmental change. Established in 2006, the COI engages a diverse group of regional stakeholders with committed public leadership from the County Board of Supervisors and program-level involvement of HHSA staff. The COI held a Partner Mix & Mingle in April to celebrate the amazing work being done by partners throughout San Diego County to promote the health of children and families.
