On Wednesday, May 1st, Lincoln High School Counseling team, lead by 12th-grade counselor: Ms. Kellie Larsen, brought 50+ graduating seniors to the College Signing Day event at UCSD. Joining by other high school students from around the San Diego County, the participants were able to celebrate their achievements with a block party consists of a DJ, photo booths with signing boards, and a Resource Fair. The block party was followed by an address from UCSD’s chancellor Khosla, professor Graeve, and an alumni panel. Later, former First Lady Michelle Obama addressed all invited students via live stream from UCLA. The highlight of the speech was when she shared that, "I had someone tell me I shouldn’t reach too high…let me tell you that will happen to you again and again. In those times you have to ask yourself, when are you gonna believe the haters, and when are you gonna believe the truth of your story?" Overall, students walked away with a sense of pride and ready to embark on their self-determined future.
College Signing Day, co-sponsored by the University of California, is a national celebration of students, especially those from low-income, underrepresented, and first-generation college-going backgrounds, who have boldly committed to pursuing higher education. Held in partnership with Reach Higher, the college access initiative launched by former first lady Michelle Obama during her time at the White House, College Signing Day honors students for taking charge of their futures by pursuing education past high school — whether at a community college, a military institution, a four-year college or university, or a professional training program.
